Storm Response
30th January 2025
Obair’s Meals on Wheels service deliver to 290 older people in the areas of West Clare, North Clare, East Clare(Tulla), South Clare, Ennis(3 routes), Inagh-Kilnamona, Shannon, Cratloe and Newmarket on Fergus. Approx 100 to 150 of our service users have been impacted by the recent power cuts with many having no water, heat, electricity and WiFi. On a normal day we offer a two course hot meal as well as the option of a chilled meal.
In the last 6 days we have mostly being delivering hot meals to service users as they will have no means of heating dinners. Our service covers 7 days but delivery is Mon to Fri, because of the Storm we have been out on the roads delivering hot meals throughout the weekends. Many of our service users are on oxygen or have dementia/ Alzheimer’s and are living in isolated rural areas. Since last weekend we have offered our own power banks and battery packs to anyone who needs them. We have been receiving referrals from Clare Co Councils Storm Response Team as well as Tusla to deliver hot meals to various other areas in Co. Clare such as, Broadford, Doonbeg, Moyasta, Dysart, Corofin, Tubber, Boston, Kilfenora and Lahinch. As of today 30th Jan many of our service users still remain without power and heat. These are our most vulnerable age group with underlying health conditions who are already vulnerable and suffering from isolation and loneliness. We will continue to support these communities until such time as their power returns.
